A place for the geek in all of us.
I'm a junkie for all eras of history. It helps that I have a degree, and teach the subject matter! Recently, while researching 1940s cooking I came across the most dapper video series on Youtube. It's called the Wartime Kitchen and Garden series. It's a first hand account documented of the people that had to survive the severe rationing in wartime Britain. There is both a cook, and a gardener. I love it! I already plan on trying the smoked apples process.
I happen to be fascinated with the thriftiness and the way that she easily debones a lamb rib. I've tried a few recipes from this era both US and UK origins, and they are great. Especially if you are in one of those in-between weeks.
Fancy meal stretchers from the 1940s
remember there are tricks to cooking after an air raid.
Christmas time during the war was a time of tremendous change. Shortages caused chefs to create meals out of things that they might have discarded or never thought of before the war. Cookbooks tried to help with uniquely tailored recipes for war time rationing. These above might not be all rationed, but they are neat.
If you cook these, please do share them! We'd love to see what you have made.
