Augusta Chiwy was one of the main characters that I had to include in my most recent book. I thought you might enjoy this tidbit! Until later lovies...
Wiki had a great little excerpt-DON"T USE IT FOR ANY REAL RESEARCH!
On 16 December 1944, the day the Germans launched their offensive, Chiwy returned to her family in Bastogne for Christmas. At that time the town seemed safely in American hands, but within days was surrounded by German troops advancing into Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Chiwy attended to civilian and military casualties with her uncle, a doctor, until 21 December, when she volunteered to serve as a nurse at the first-aid station of the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, commanded by Dr. John Prior. Chiwy worked at the aid station in the Rue Neufchateau, and even donned an Army uniform in order to go out into the field to collect the wounded while under fire.[
On 24 December 1944, the first aid station was hit by a German bomb, killing over 30 wounded men and another volunteer nurse Renee Lemaire. Chiwy was with Prior in an adjoining building and was blown through a wall, but survived unhurt. She continued to assist the American forces until the siege was finally lifted two days later.

The canals were created in the mid-nineteenth century, in part to divert the power of the Connecticut river and expand commerce. Paper production was a staple of the mill towns in New England, and Holyoke was no different. The canals are the arteries of the area, created to power the mills with pure natural force. Men armed with picks and human will carved them out of the rocky soil of New England. However, dams made of wood broke and crumbled and there have been times in the past that they had to be removed or refitted. Interestingly, Holyoke boasts a lot of pride in the immigrants who came to the are just to work in the mills. It's worth a look and definitely a walk on the old walking tour path.
Weird things pulled out of the canals
The canals are on two levels, and are drained yearly in order to clean and check on the jagged rock walls that line the area. In November of 2016 a body was pulled out of the river, after a car chase with police. Construction equipment was pulled out of it in 2017, falling haphazardly in. In 2012, another human skull was found in the water.
Outlander fans love traveling to the places that remind them of the Starz series Outlander and the books as well. The books take readers from Scotland to France to England, then to spots in Nazi Germany, and then to the New World. This is later in the series when Jaime and Claire are traveling to the caribbean, looking for Ian, Jaime's abducted nephew. After that they end up in the American colonies and specifically settle down a place they call Fraser's Ridge. It's a mountainous, spot nestled in the mountains of North Carolina. You can find the books on Amazon or in the right hand links on the sidebar. I love them, so they will ALWAYS be posted there!!!!

The search for fraser's ridge
If you have a chance to visit North Carolina be sure to check out the green forests, and babbling brooks of the mountains. OutlanderAmerica.com has been sourcing out spots already where Jaime (completely fictional but we all feel like he's real) and Claire (the other real/fictional person we love to think about) would have travelled, lived and you know...
The ridge is located on a plot in the mountains according to DG of about 10,000 square acres between the Yadkin River and Boone North Carolina. North Carolina boasts the largest population of Scot's in the country!! DG chose this place in her book for good reasons! Highland culture is especially strong in the mountains here.
Boone, North Carolina
Boone is a great place to start touring your book, and don't forget to stop in at the Mast Farm Inn, where they hosted a gathering last year! In July, they have the annual Highland Games on Grandfather Mountain! You definitely needneed to check that out!
