Millions of Stories...
A place for the geek in all of us.
Recently, I decided to take a gander into my husbands genealogy. I love history. I found out something interesting. He is a Macdonell (Macdonald) of the Antrim line. They owned castles all over the Western edge of Scotland. They also went to Ireland as well, where they had another castle.
The men of Dunlace Castle were known as the MacDonnell's of Antrim. They considered themselves and are considered Scots while living in Northern Ireland. The castle is a national Irish treasure. While there are many interesting stories surrounding the castle one of particular interest in the commandeering of spanish cannons from a shipwreck. The Spanish ship Girona smashed upon the rocky crags that sit near the castle.
Unable to resist pilfering, the MacDonnells took all they could from the shipwreck. They placed the cannons at their gatehouse. The rest of the goods were sold to restore Dunlace castle. They were able to restore it, and then one day the British came. While they were speaking about reparations someone mentioned that they needed those cannons back. The MacDonnells refused that. Then it came to blows and in true 17th century fashion the head of the governor was hacked off and sent to the Irish clan of O'Neils. It was a nice gift, and the O'Neils decided to use it as a ball.
Let me repeat that:
They used his HEAD as a ball!!
