A place for the geek in all of us.
When people think about travel, certainly they don't consider Kansas. But, it's a land filled with magic, and cool history. Kansas is not just flat, its filled with furrows, and desert, high plateaus and low rivers. There is more to it than Oz, and more than Amber waves of grain, there is a deep well in Greensburg that you could fall into, and furrows left from families who traversed the Santa Fe trail.
Eastern Kansas Charm
Visiting eastern Kansas head to Fort Scott, and check out Fort Scott National Historic Site. General Winfield Scott, "fuss and feathers", served as a general in the United States Army. The fort was named after him, and thus the town of course. Fort Scott has it's share of interesting history. The Fort itself was built to last, it's still around despite having been auctioned and revitalized post Mexican War. Reenactors abound there, at least once a month there is something going on bringing the past back to life. I'm one of them! My kids too! Eastern Kansas has tales of witch washerwomen, mine pits that you are not supposed to swim in, but people do and a hill that can actually move your car on its own. According to local legend. Plus, the towns that dot the area are filled with Old West history from the saloons to the areas that used to ba place a disrepute.
A giant strip mining 1850b shovel. The shovel is 160 ft high, and in its heyday it could lift 150 tons of coal. But, it was an expensive machine to operate, and they soon found that the coal didn't make up for operation costs. It's massive.
The Sculptures of the West
Along the way west, there are several interesting places. One is a stretch of road covered in cartoonish weird signs. It's west of the small town of mullinville, and it's pretty noticeable. There are political cartoons from every era. And just plain interesting cartoons!
I stopped, took some photos and hopped back in.
Kansas is more thank you think, from salt mines and more.
