A secret hidden for over 70 years in the bottom of a cup in the collection of the Auschwitz museum was revealed unexpectedly to staff. After cleaning and reviewing artifacts, its false bottom was discovered. Years of rot caused the false bottom to become evident. They also found a necklace with the ring.
“The hiding of valuable items … shows that the Jewish families constantly had a ray of hope,” Piotr M. A. Cywiński, the director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, said in a statement.
That hope was created by an intentional lie, that the Nazi's created to keep the Jews moving. The objective was to simply keep them under the idea that they were be relocated, which made it possible that they would bring valuables with them and the Nazi's could seize them.
They didn't get everything though! As this mug proves.
