Located in Dodge City, this living history museum is pretty cool. They are open year round, and have live demonstrations, shoot outs, and dancing. The variety show and dinner I just couldn't get too. But there is always another time.
Where: Dodge City Kansas
When: Year Round
Dodge City was an outcropping from Fort Dodge. The fort now right outside the current town, is actually a nursing home! The history is still there, the original buildings are there and you can take a self-guided walking tour. Wagon trains stopped by this area on their way farther west or south. It was a safe place, free from indian attacks and ruffians (in theory). Originally the troops lived in dugouts, sod houses and things like that.
Custer's 7th was at Dodge city at one point, while Custer was facing a Court Marshall.
Dodge City has a lot of history. Some things still stand, like the Fort, the wheel ruts on the Santa Fe trail just outside of town, and Boot Hill. It was a lawless place, where it's crew of peacekeepers wrangled, shot, and pushed anyone they wanted out of town. It's definitely a must see for Western Travel.
