A place for the geek in all of us.
(Note: I was not paid for this, or for the links. I just like Black Sails.)
Black sails is my current binge worthy series. I've been watching it because I've always loved pirates. There is something about piracy that makes me want to try it! Well, not really. But only the good parts, like finding treasure. Other than that they can keep the days at sea without water or food, venereal diseases, violence you know most of it.
In Season 3 the pirates are left to their own devices, with a horde of gold seated up in Fort Nassau. They have to repair the fort and hide the gold from the eminent british who are coming back to the forgotten, and uncivilized island. There is much more to the season. I have to say that while Captain Flint is an entirely fictitious character he is one of my favorite. Yeah he is insane, and he is zealously attacking British governors who hang pirates-with a haunting about him from his lost lover who was shot dead with him during a peacekeeping treaty.
Black Sails is definitely not a romantic show, its rowdy, dirty, and you can imagine the stink of the people from your couch. It's bloody and harsh, there is barely any time for love most of it is living by base pleasures and living by the seat of your pants.
The series is based on the idea that it is a prequel to Treasure Island. The story has no basis in reality but there are some traits that are realistic.
The Republic of Nassau was a real place that for 11 years served as a pirate haven. In fact from 1706 to 1718 it was a place that the pirates ruled and lived in by a code of conduct in order to bring a little order. What little order they had was greatly misconstrued.
I imagine that the island Flint is stuck on is similar to the island that he buries his treasure on in order to have treasure island become a story. Now, there are a lot of stupid people more stupid than smart in the show. I can see where that might be accurate. Considering most of the pirates act more with their nether regions than their brains.
Charles Vane, a pirate Captain who is badass has consistently fought to the death in the past three seasons. His old father figure Blackbeard returned in this season to offer him work. Then of course the two fighting together is a formidable force. Anyone who thinks this show is boring, has not watched anything but sitcoms for the past decade.
Black Sails ended with a fourth season that I am chomping to watch. I love to see some of the people I have studied in my undergraduate years brought to life. Anne Bonney and Mary Reed were two that I researched. At the time there were poor pieces available for research. But the basics of their stories are far from normal. Anne Bonny in Black Sails is a dependent, psychotically unstable killer who hangs on to Jack Rackham as her only friend.
So, I have not seen Mary Reed as of yet, and I don't think that they will have her in the story. I'm confident that the rest of my binge worthy watch will be awesomely worth it. Of course as always I'm obsessed with Outlander. You should be too.
